The Story of Janine
I wish you had known my wife, Janine. She was nothing short of amazing in so many ways. Her eyes. A smile that would light up a room. Laughter that was medicine to one's ears.
She was highly intelligent, an intellectual - usually found juggling five books on varying subjects at any given time - and had incredible street smarts - a very rare and potent combination.
In short, she was the kindest, sweetest, smartest, most lovely, beautiful and decent person I've ever been blessed to know.
Everything that is good in me or about me was either because of Janine or enhanced by her.
Janine didn't want a funeral because she didn't want strangers saying the last words about her before sending her on her next journey. She did want me to continue living, to do things that would make me happy while continuing to live guided by the ideals and principles she had lived by for our 27 years together, and to get back into music.
With this project, hopefully the first of many, I believe that I am honoring Janine's final wishes.
We both believe in helping others, in giving back, and in not just talking about it, but doing something about it.
During Janine's yearlong battle with lung cancer I learned many things. As this project develops, I will share more (at www.givingshelter.net) but the primary goal of this album centers on one critical point in particular:
We had to live in hotels for more than six months of her battle because the hospital where Janine was being treated was 100 miles (in Southern California traffic!) away from our home.
Needless to say, this was financially taxing.
When looking for some "relief" I learned that there wasn't a nationally organized plan to help families in a similar situation. Nothing from the American Cancer Society®, the American Lung Association® or through a Government-sponsored program.
Some hospitals have housing on campus for current patients. Others, like the one where we were getting treatment, have discounted rates with local hotels. Yet there is nothing on a national level.
There are nearly 160,000 people in the United States alone dying of lung cancer each year. There are millions more battling all different kinds of cancer on a daily basis. There are countless charities in place raising money for research in order to beat this insidious terrorist. Yes, cancer is a terrorist. It strikes fear, shows no mercy or prejudice, and leaves collateral damage wherever it strikes.
However, during Janine's battle, we had to, like so many others, foot the bill on our own as there was nowhere to go for financial assistance.
With your help, through sales of this album, I intend to change that. For every album sold, whether as a download or an old-fashioned physical CD, I will direct a large portion of the proceeds toward a fund that's sole purpose is to provide financial aid for those brave warriors in a similar position to what we experienced.
By purchasing this album you will not only get to enjoy (hopefully) listening to some of the finest musicians on the planet, but you will also be helping to make Janine's passing have some significance, and most importantly, helping ease the burden for other families in a similar position.
You are invited to follow our progress at www.givingshelter.net as we work together to make a difference.
Please allow me a moment to extend my deepest thanks to all the other-worldly talented people who contributed to the music: the studio owners and engineers who put in countless hours to ensure everything sounded perfect, the incredible, world-class musicians who made my songs come to life, and most of all to my producer, drummer and incredible friend, Joshua Seth Eagan, without whom this dream would've been impossible to realize.
A billion thanks to all of my friends and family who were along for Janine's battle, and who continue to keep an eye on me, ensuring that I continue forward on the right path.
Most of all, my love and undying gratitude to Janine, without whom I would not be alive today to carry on her legacy and address this urgent need.
Lastly, sincere thanks to all of you for helping make a difference where it is needed most - with the cancer patients and their families who need our help.
Bless you all!
